iJakarta, An Electronic Library App for Free Books

Reading definitely is not one of most of Indonesian people strong points for now. I know many people who prefer games or movies instead of books. Sadly, they live in Jakarta, the biggest city in the country where access to books seems to be easiest compared to anywhere else in the country. Not to mention internet connection which is at its best in this city that enable people to read e-books.

Given this condition, Regional Library and Archives Agency (Badan Perpustakaan dan Arsip Daera - BPAD) of Jakarta City Administration launched its initiative to provide electronic libary application for Android and iOS which they call iJakarta.

iJakarta, an electronic library app provide free books from 18 collections of e-book including Ahok's, the famous Jakarta Governor, collection which in total provides more than 3,000 books and reading materials. All of the collections are available for free!

Who can borrow the collection?

According to someone from Aksaramaya, the developer of iJakarta, this app supposedly only available only for people in Jakarta (based on their location by the time using this app). However, for now, the app is still available for everyone despite their location. And this will be until early 2016.

The app provides two options to register. Using email or Facebook account. However, up until I write this post, the later option still can't be used. But we don't need to worry, the e-mail registration is quite easy. We don't need to provide too much detail to register.

The most important thing is the email that we use to register should be a valid email (duh!) since we will need to confirm our registration in order to be able to use the app. So anyone with active email  anywhere can download and use this app.

How can we borrow the book?

Once we are registered, we can browse from more than 3,000 books and reading materials which the system already categorize them into some specific categories or just simply use the search facility. Once we find the book we can borrow by download it to our smartphones. Once we confirm to borrow the book we will need to confirm registration as a borrower for the book just like in a real library. Don't worry it's only a tap on our screen.

You shouldn't worry about the book size, its only 3 to 6 MB. With current internet connection, it won't even matter.

As for the book itself, once you already choose to borrow the book, it will stay on you bookshelf for three days before the app automatically delete it. But don't worry, if you haven't finished reading the book, you can always re-borrow it. But what you need to remember is just like in real library, the book collection is limited. Once they're out of stock, you have to wait until people return it.

==========

I have been using this iJakarta app for about two weeks now and I can say that the app really is something. I love it. With the free books and the reading experience I may say that this iJakarta worth 4 out of 5 stars.
